Careers in Sales and Marketing
It's tough, hectic and rough on your nerves but it can be fun. Deadlines are everything. And the pace can be electrifying. But yes, marketing can be dull too. Poring over reams of data can be very soul destroying. Still, marketing can be very enjoyable. It's always on the go. It's dynamic and can be a very interesting job.
But what about a job in Sales?
Getting into a traditional job in a marketing department is never easy. But there are other alternatives in the vast world of marketing. Sales people are the front-line troops in any company. It is their job to generate sales of a company's products/services and get revenue in. In other words, they are pretty vital to a company. Going into sales can act as a route into a marketing position somewhere down the line. However, a job in sales can lead to a very satisfactory career. The pay isn't bad either.
What types of Sales jobs are available?
Sales Manager

Key Account Manager
Usually manages the larger client accounts. Negotiates the development of a stronger relationship over a period of time. Plans all promotional, pricing and support for each account.
Sales Representative
Deals directly with existing and potential customers in selling and promoting a company's products and services
Telemarketing/Telesales
Office-bound selling over the telephone. It can also involve the collection of marketing information.
Merchandiser
This involves overseeing the arrangement of a company's products at point-of-sale in shops, supermarkets and other outlets. Building displays, putting up posters and stocking up the shelves & displays are the duties. For all sales jobs a good personality is essential. You have to like dealing with people. You must also be disciplined, determined, and self-motivated. Many sales people are very independent. They are out on there on their own most of the time. Thus they need to be able to handle the downs as well as the ups. Selling is a tough job, regardless of what you are selling or who you work for. Though a good company with good products and support makes things a little easier.
